They Should Give You Options

A coach of any kind should be giving you recommendations and advice instead of telling you exactly what to do. Your health coach should not force you because they should be encouraging you instead. If your coach forces you to do something you are more likely to not actually do it. However, if they are positively encouraging you to keep up the good work then you are more likely to continue on the healthier path.

They Listen More Than They Talk

If you health coach talks more than they listen, then you should look at getting a new one. When you have a one-on-one session, your coach should ask you questions about what you need and listen to you. They can then provide guidance and feedback based on what you have told them about your lifestyle and your personal goals.

Of course, it is important that they ask you questions or talk to you about recipes and exercises that you should consider. However, they should not spend the entire session simply talking to you about what you should and should not do.

The way that the health coach acts is important, but you also need to consider what their qualifications are. As health coaching is still a relatively new field the qualifications that the coach has could differ greatly to another coach. Some coaches may have done extensive yearlong training programs while others have completed a short program. The differing qualifications means that you will be able to find a coach that fits your style based on the qualification they have completed.
